By working with 25 growers in strategic production areas across the Western Cape, Stems ensures a consistency in supply throughout the South African stone fruit season from October to April. The company focuses on quality, rather than quantity – only planting fruit that have been secured from the best breeders in the world. This sets their produce apart in terms of taste and variety. Stems also focuses on sustainability.
The drought of 2017-18 gave rise to a more efficient water management system. New varieties of fruit are chosen after considering their water consumption, yield and economic value. Besides this, mulching continues to be a standard practice across farms, and micro sprayers are being replaced with drip irrigation.
